Energy management systems – ISO 50001

ISO 50001 “Energy management systems – Requirements and guidelines for use” defines the requirements to create, start, maintain and improve an energy management system. Such system enables the business to have a systematic approach to constantly improve its energy performance in terms of a more efficient and sustainable use of energy, regardless of its form.

ISO 50001 is applicable to all factors determining energy performance and that can be controlled and influenced by the company. The structure of the standard is aligned with that of other system standards such as ISO 9001 (quality management systems) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems) , therefore it can either be used independently or it can be integrated with other systems.

The standard is applicable to chemical, pharmaceutical, electronics, engineering, metallurgical, textile, paper, food, business services, ESCO (Energy Service Company), Public Administrations, mass retailers, trade associations and, generally speaking, to any business that wants to prove their compliance with energy policies through self-evaluation and self-declaration of conformity or through third party certification of their energy management system.

The certification of an Energy Management System allows you to get several benefits, including:

  • implementation of processes necessary to analyse the energy consumption;

  • activation of contingency plans;

  • definition of objectives and performance indicators to reduce energy consumption;

  • identification of opportunities to improve energy efficiency;

  • improvement of reputation and image of the brand

  • Show shareholders, customers and employees, an evidence of company’s commitment to reduce energy consumption and emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG).

The achievement of ISO 50001 certification proves business attention for environmental impact and represents a significant advantage over other competitors. Such certification creates also new business opportunities and helps the company better serve the needs of current customers and suppliers.
